My work wardrobe at “work” work is pretty dull. Black dress, add a blazer here or there and some patterned pants on behind the scenes type days. If you follow Instagram you’d be forgiven for yawning every now and again as you see the favourites trotted out again and again. When I work for myself though, with the blog or consulting there’s a freedom to what I wear that I just don’t get mid-week. I get a chance to play around in my wardrobe and come up with my own personal take on professional. Chambray included.
It doesn’t mean I’m always happy with the result though…
Case in point. I love this dress. Love this preppy layered style. But there’s something not quite right about it. Looking at this outfit now I wish I’d gone with the shorter knit I originally had on in blue. This long sleeve t-shirt is comfortable and was a nice level of warmth but it doesn’t look the best. The jumper was going to be too hot for the humid Saturday. But maybe I should have suffered though… Hmmm. Maybe it’s that I’m not happy at all really with the photos. Or it could just be me coming down with some sort of bug that looks so flat, feedback welcomed!
Help a Suger out. What would YOU do?

How would YOU style this chambray shirt dress for work?
Hi! I’m Melissa Walker Horn. Around here, they call me Suger. I’m the Chief Blogger and doer of all the things here at Suger Coat It. Blogging since 1901; I love a casual ootd, taking photos, and writing about things that irk or inspire me. I love wine and cheese, long days at the beach and spending time with my family. I make stuff for the internet over at Chalkboard Digital. You know, living the sweet life.
I would try a button up cardi, it keeps that preppy and professional look but you can leave a few buttons undone top and bottom to bring the waist in and show off more of that chambray goodness! You can also alternate between long sleeve and shorter sleeve cardis to suit the weather in Gympie 😉
Right. I’ll dig out my red one, I think and give that a go. Seems like it would be a good match and it’s a little bit cropped. That will help too, I think.
Oooh red, awesome! Kinda Christmassy too! 😉 Please post a pic when you try it, I’d love to see how it all comes together…and what shoes you put with it!
Will do! I was saying to Claire I will grab some photos for the page of all the different suggestions. It’ll be like playing dress ups with a Suger Barbie or something. 😉
My idea isn’t even corporate haha loose the cardi because it’s summer you crazy lady! I would wear the dress with an open vest that was either some form or flowy material or lace crochet even. Yeah I’m not helping your cause hehe but I think it’d work!
It was COLD HERE. Bloody rain and storms and all that. Makes it tricky to pack all the winter gear away. Yeah, yeah, you’re no help at all. Haha. 😛
I would try an open short vest, maybe even a waistcoat. Or maybe a longline waterfall cardi in mustard with a brown belt at the waist. You look great in the pic though.
Thank you. Mustard and tan, well I’m on board with THAT. Unfortunately I got rid of all my waist coats at the last clean out. Darn it. Don’t you have when that happens!
A light/thin v-neck knit sweater. BiG W had some in over this winter. I think it’s the crew neck ribbing and teeshirt hem which is throwing this off visually.

Thanks Alexandra. Nice one. I have a sweater very similar to this, I’ll need to dig it out.
i’d wear, being summer, a white, longer-than-the-chambray-dress jacket or long cardi, worn open, probably from TS, depending on what type of work you do. It would put some length into the overall look. I think the top you have on kind of binds you. I would prefer to open up the look.
I saw this sleeveless white longline blazer on some international plus bloggers, I might have to seek one of those babies out. Nice one.
(and love the hair colour!)
Thank you! 🙂
I’ve been eyeing this dress for ages…. but the way you styled it- I quite like it!!! 🙂 I was concerned I’d be limited in how I could style it!
I don’t think you’d be limited AT ALL. The Facebook page went off with suggestions the other night when I first posted this, would be well worth a look.
with tights – footless or with feet – shoes or boots. that’s how I’ve worn it so far………it is a lot shorter on you than me….
Well I am almost a foot taller than you most days. Haha. Nice one, footless tights I LOVE.
