Aussie Curves: Peplum {She Wore What}

Well, well well, would you lookie here! It’s Aussie Curves: Peplum week, and I can TELL the ladies will come out in force. Peplum is one of those trends I took a while to get on board with. I saw all the usual commentary on the style and had believed them.

But for me and my relatively straight, rectangular body type, peplum does wonders when I want to feel curvy, shapely and like I have a waist. Funny side story. Someone on Pinterest said that it reduces the definition at my core, and I have to disagree completely. You’ve seen me in bodycon. What waist curve?

But anyway, if you are curious, I encourage you to try several styles on. Here’s a plus-size peplum shopping guide I put together a while back. Each retailer has a slightly different cut or length. I strongly recommend trying some on to find what works for you. Anything that starts too high-waisted doesn’t work for me. I turn into Boobs McGee. A longer line, low-placed peplum is where it’s at for me.

But now, let’s see the pics and talk about the colour. You know—the important stuff.

I’ve worn this top to work a few times, layered with a black suit or a simple pencil skirt. It’s a great colour; nothing picks you up more than a dash of hot pink. For me anyway. It’s one of those colours that works on me. The funny part is that when I was younger, my Dad pointed out colours he knew would suit my sister and me and gave us our colouring. We laughed at him and told him to stick to more manly pursuits than colour matching. But he is rarely wrong.

It’s an interesting thing the whole colours suit what works and what doesn’t. As someone who changes their hair colour regularly, I’ve become pretty honed in on what works for me, but that can change when I change my hair. Or even when I’m out in the sun more, my skin naturally darkens. For example, when I had red hair, I could never have pulled off this colour. Though that said, I’m probably the only redhead in the world who can’t pull off wearing some shades of green. Weird.

It really adds something to the top, the texture, that’s why I love it too. Thanks Amy.

Haha. It’s a great, easy to wear top. And the skirt, divine.

  4. I can’t do peplum. I’ve tried and I just can’t do it, it makes me look HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE! Even with all my fat, I do have a waist and an hourglass figure albeit an exaggerated one but it is there!

I do agree with you though, it definitely doesn’t reduce waist definition for you because you’re right, you’re quite up and down and don’t really have that curve at your waist, when you wear peplum, it gives you that impression of a curve.

The colour really suits you and that skirt is gorgeous. I LOVE those shoes, I’ve seen them at Target but so far have resisted buying them. I DID however buy two maxi dresses with STRIPES on them yesterday from Big W – I blame you 100% for that purchase ;)

Haha. I’m like that with a few different style {the cute retro dresses TOTALLY don’t work on my body and make me feel really frumpy and awkward}. You’ve got to give it a go and discard if it doesn’t work I say.

Thank you! Now PLEASE go tell the people on Pinterest. Haha.

Thanks hun. And yes, this skirt may never, ever leave my wardrobe. Ever. Love it. The shoes are fab but are deceptively high. Comfortable though thanks to the wedge. A really nice shoe. I’d buy them again with my own money {they were originally gifted as part of a sponsored post} if that makes sense. Four times over! Enjoy those maxi’s. I’m happy to hear that the stripe addiction continues to spread. ;)

Gah, sorry Sam! I always get a bit sad about putting up photos of AWESOME old stock but I can’t help it. I love my old items and one day the stuff you can buy today will be the same IYKWIM. So yeah. Sorry. And thanks muchly!

  9. I am still terrified of peplum (lol!). I think it is because I have not found one that hits in the right spot. So far, I have found them cut too high and end up looking like the front of a naval ship or too low and it looks like a maternity top. However, you look SO cute, so I am going to give it another try. Fingers crossed!!!

Keep trying. It could be a size up/size down thing too. I find that some if they are even a tiny bit too small POP out more at the peplum and look weird. Try all sorts of things and if they still don’t work for you, it’s on to patterned pants you go. Haha.

      Thank you!

  10. Yep, pink looks amazing on you! this outfit is so strikingly pretty. Hot!

I swear to god I’m going to fly down there just to break into your house and steal that jacket one day, just to teach you a lesson. You’re a giant pain in my ass. :P

  18. That pink looks amazing. I totally hear you on the whole Boob McGee thing, I’m the same. I definitely need to try on some longer peplum tops!

Thanks Meagan! Haha. I knew some of the ladies would get it. Too high and it’s ALL boob. Try the longer, it’ll work a charm. City Chic seem to have the longest out at the moment. ASOS sometimes too.
