People are generally good

A tow on the beach? No worries mate.
Do you see it? When you open your eyes you can see it everywhere. Maybe it’s a small town thing or maybe I’m just looking. Today I went to get the groceries. Yup, that was the earlier post. Having a whine about it. But while I was there I kept seeing these random acts of kindness. Small ones. Little things that might have gone unnoticed had I not been paying attention.
Like the young man who scooped up a large bag of dog food for a woman attempting to wrangle a wayward trolley and two kids. He declined offers to just throw the bag on top of the the trolley {where it had fallen from} and insisted on walking with them to the car with it.
Or the elderly couple who’s trolley was returned by the young girl walking past. A simple, are you finished? I’ve got this, was all she said as she wheeled it away for them. Ultimately saving them the long walk back to the trolley bay {a bug bear of mine, they’re so spread out is it any wonder people just dump their trolleys wherever!}.
And there was the little boy, not much older than a toddler, sitting, mid aisle and sobbing. He was asked by a girl of about 10 if he was ok. Nooooo, he wailed, I lost my Mum. Oh she said well you have to go to the front. She took his hand and I watched as she dragged him to the centre station where his Mother was reporting him missing. Reunited the young girl let go of the boys hand, gave him a quick hug and walked away {I assume to find her own parent/guardian}.
I left Coles, my heart singing. And not because I snagged another cardie, a top and a singlet. But because people are generally good. They are kind, loving and helpful. Sometimes I think it’s easy to forgot, when the supermarket is crowded and people are frazzled and in a rush. But this was a little reminder not to forget to be kind. Lend a hand when you can. And be generally good.
How’s THAT for a incentive to get the groceries. I’ve been smiling ever since.

  1. I love simple acts of kindness like that. I like in a small town too (even smaller than your neck of the woods) and I do like that people are generally willing to help each other out.

  2. I live in what city people would consider a small town and i see the same kinds of things you're talking about – every day. ( I also see a lot of crap but you get the good with the bad right? )It made me laugh that the last time we were in sydney were shopping at parramatta and a lady in front of us dropped something out of her bag. Mick picked it up, rushed after her and tapped her on the shoulder with an " excuse me? ". She looked at him like he was about to murder her until he said " you dropped this " and then she couldnt smile enough. It was like she'd never witnessed anything like it before!

  3. What a great post and wonderful things you have witnessed. People are pretty damn good, on the most part.

  4. and it's always the simple things that mean the most as well.~x~

  5. It's so very true. I love days like this when I see those tiny random acts. No matter how big or small they make a day brighter! :)

  6. This made me smile. People are pretty nice aren't they?Just today one of my customers was going through every pocket he had trying to find enough money to pay for his very small amount of food. The lady next in line handed him $2 to make up the difference. Random acts like this just make my day. I often do the same thing myself, if the pensioners are 10 cents or so short I just let them go. I know it will be made up during the day by others who say keep the change when it may be only 5 cents.

  7. This post brought tears to my eyes. I am such a sook!

  16. LOVE. THIS. POST.When I was little, I was standing in line at the check out with my mum. There was an older man in front of us and as he was getting his wallet out to pay for his groceries he dropped it. I never even thought about it I just bent down and picked it up and handed it to him. He was so grateful and the way he smiled at me made me feel so good. He was so thankful for such a little girl to do such a thoughtful thing that he asked my mum if he could buy me some lollies. He said I could pick out whatever I wanted. I have never forgotten that lesson and from that day I have always tried to do nice little things for people wherever I can.It really doesn't take much at all to put a smile on someone's face and you never know the impact that small little act of kindness can have on someone. I don't expect anything in return, but I do feel like good things come back to you for it one way or another.

  17. people are generally good melissa. i had a horrible experience leaving work yesterday to find a girl laying out on the street. apparently she jumped out of a moving car. it was crazy. we stayed with her, talking until the police and ambulance arrived. it wasn't long before many people were there to help. a little more extreme than your stories but sharing the idea that people still do care with all that goes on around them. xo.
