When my sister came to stay with us. We were soon squashing her entire life, car and wardrobe into the spare rooms in our house. Our backyard had a new feature too; her dog. A now 2 year old lab, Ellie soon won our hearts just being so darn cute.
It was a short week or two later that she came on heat. I know, I probably should have disclaimer’ed that. But wham, there it is. The all natural truth of it. All of a sudden this well behaved young dog turned into a wandering pain in the butt. We made it through by building a fence and using the chain.
But what was a short stay has turned into a longer one and the time rolled around again. Bigger now, stronger and more determined we felt like Ellie, the dog, was missing more often than she was here. Hubby took aggressive, evasive action.
He purchased an electric fence wire. What can I say, once a farm boy, always a farm boy. And while I was away this weekend he strung it up and set in it motion. Apparently. When I quizzed him this morning, he told me not to touch it.
Funny, it had never occurred to me to do so.
Hubby shared that he had and it gave him a boot. Like a shock, for non-country folk. I shook my head and questioned the voltage {what can I say, once a farm girl, always a farm girl}. It is fine, he said but it might give Ellie a decent kick if she attempts to get out. I screwed up my nose and asked if it was safe. We don’t want to electrocute her. I said.
Or worse, having to explain that we have somehow managed to electrocute the neighbour’s constantly wandering, pooing under our clothesline just where you have to stand to hang the clothes, tends to like to scratch the paint off our roller door, mangy old cat. We don’t want to do that now…
Do we!? Hmmm, I ‘supose not. Humph.
* No cats were harmed in the making of this little tale. Not yet anyway. I’ll keep you posted.
