Definitely go for it. Sponsorship is a legitimate marketing communications tool – they won't say yes if they don't perceive value. And if you're providing that value then it's win-win! If you don't ask you don't get…

That is a quandry indeed. Perhaps you could ask for sponsorship for one and not the other, eg. cover your own accomodation but ask for travel costs. That said, there is nothing unethical in just asking to be sponsored in return for promoting a brand, regardless of whether you can afford to go to a con or not. Free product instead of asking for con-related costs perhaps.
