You just put them on.

I received an email today. It mention a comment on one of my instagram photos. It was one of me wearing the floral pants pictured above. The commenter said, I’d love to wear pants like that. And I responded with, it’s pretty easy, you just buy them and pull them on. A little bit cheeky, of course, you wouldn’t expect anything less. But true too. If you desperately want to wear floral pants, you should wear them.

Want to wear patterned pants?

Want to wear horizontal stripes?

Hot pink or lime green?

A mini, maxi or midi skirt?

Short shorts?

All you need to do is buy them and put them on {buying them is important, we certainly don’t encourage shoplifting around here.}. All you really need to do is decide to wear something then wear it. I don’t know about you but I spent way too many years being dictated to by magazines, fashion rules and even the opinions of others. Now more than ever if I like it I wear it. No argument and without any concern for what other people think.

Most days.

So my words of encouragement for you, and for Megan who sent the email, is as simple as if you love it and want to wear it, wear it. Every time you do you get more confident in your style, happier as an expressed version of yourself and stronger. It’s a practice. A habit you get into that takes some reprogramming of the old ways of dressing.

So today I double dare you to dig into that wardrobe and pull out something you love but hardly ever wear and wear the heck out of that baby. Experience what it is express yourself through your clothes, through your own personal style! Uh oh, you don’t own anything you love? Well that just sucks. Best you sort that out sometime soon, do you think? What are you waiting for?

So Sugers, what say you? Challenge accepted?

  1. Man I love you! Can’t wait to hug you in 34 days!!
Ive always been worried about what people would think. “OMG why is that old fay bitch wearing THAT” But I’m working on that.
Like my pretty leggings. Manpet and the kids hate them and don’t think I should wear them out the house. But I’ve eyed them off for so long, I like em, so screw you!

I can relate to this. I had to come out of the fashion closet in a sense. I let fashion magazines ect., dictate what I wore. And I was very sensitive to the criticisms of friends, family and strangers. I felt like I wasn’t good enough but now I know I am good enough just as I am. Confidence is a hard thing to manufacture but now I have it and I wear it like my armour.

There are still fashion styles that I have been unconsciously avoiding. Last weekend I wore a strapless top to a family picnic at a one of the busiest parks in Brisbane. I have not gone strapless or braless in public since I was a child. It’s very liberating and letting go of those old fashion rules in my head. It makes me feel quite elated.

I love this, thanks for sharing and you’re SO right. Wearing those last ‘taboo’ styles can be so liberating. Love, love, LOVE this.

  3. Love you Melissa. Best advice of all x

      Thank you Nikki. :)

  4. This year I started wearing leggins as pants. I know “the rule” says I shouldn´t, but everybody and their mother (even my mother!) are. The first time I wore them like this to go get a drink with my friends I felt like a rockstar, and now I´m wondering why it took me so long to do it. These few month I´ve been trying new colors and textures and really having fun :D

YES! Liv and I often joke about wearing leggings as pants and SURPRISE the world didn’t end. Haha. Enjoy yourself lady! Work those leggings.

  5. Just buy it and put it on is wonderful advice! I spend so much time worrying about people thinking I look like mutton dressed as lamb, or just mutton, or just old and fat and crappy that I end up not wearing what I love, and feeling crappy all day anyway. The things we do to ourselves! From now on, I’m taking your advice into my every day wardrobing.. thanks :-)

You’re welcome! And that sounds like a pretty darn good plan.
