Red Lentil and Tomato Dahl {Thermomix}

This vegetarian Dahl is all kinds of amazing. I add that wondering if ALL Dahl is vegetarian anyway? Maybe it is. I don’t know. moving on however I’m going to share it with you. It’s from the Thermomix everyday cookbook but if you’re a little savvy in the kitchen I’m sure you’ll be able to modify it to the stovetop. It’s pretty fool-proof, so I’m sure you’ll do great.

You’ll need

  • 1 carrot roughly chopped {grated if not using TM}
  • Fresh coriander
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3 cloves garlic {crushed}
  • 2.5cm ginger peeled {crushed}
  • 1 large onion
  • 30g oil {we used coconut, it was FAB}
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp mild chilli powder
  • 400g wat
  • 400g coconut milk
  • 230g red lentils {dried. Yellow split peas work too}
  • 350g tomatoes {roughly chopped fresh or canned works too}
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Then do this

{Thermomix method, altar as necessary for stove top}
  1. Grate carrot and coriander in TM bowl for 5 seconds on speed 7.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Place cumin and mustard seeds and mill for 15sec on speed 8 {crush in mortar and pestle}
  4. Add ginger, garlic, onion and chop for 5 sec on speed 7.
  5. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  6. Add oil and carrot/coriander and sauté for 2 minutes at 100 on speed 1.
  7. Add garam masala, turmeric and chilli powder and sauté for 1 minute at 100 on speed 1.
  8. Add water, coconut milk, lentils and tomatoes and cook for 15 minutes at 100 on speed 1 {cooking time WILL vary for stove top}
  9. Add lime juice, more fresh coriander and cook for 5 minutes at 100 on speed 1.
  10. And you’re done! Serve or freeze or refrigerate. It’s good whenever.

Be warned, this makes a heaping helping of the stuff. Hubby and I are STILL eating it a week later. It’s super filling and warm and toasty like comfort food. Perfect for Winter. Perfect for the change of season. We eat ours with Naan bread and natural yoghurt. Enjoy.

      Absolutely. We had it with Naan bread and yoghurt one night and broccoli another. Yum yum.

    Have you tried using coconut favoured evaporated milk? I believe it has a lot less fat than normal coconut milk. It is in the condensed milk aisle.

      No I haven’t. I’m sure it would work the same, let us know if you give it a go. I’m not too worried about fats. I find we eat very little in our diet anyway.

    Yep dahl is always vegetarian. Used to be somewhat of a staple diet in our house due to the family being vegetarian. Healthy and yum! However, have never used coconut milk in ours!

        You’re wonderful. Thank you.

  5. Just made a stove top version for dinner tonight – it was great and turned my Dahl skeptical partner and step son in Dahl loving.

  6. (400g wat) May i ask what is it and where will i find it?

      Sorry! Water. Typo.

  7. Yum! Yummmmm! I left out the mustard seeds because I didn’t have any, subbed lemon for lime for the same reason and should have soaked the lentils, but still so so tasty.

    1. Oooo nice one. And yes, I hear you, I often don’t bother to soak the lentils but by day two, if there are leftovers, you’ll be set. Haha.

  8. Do you need to soak the lentils first?

    1. You don’t neeeed to but the soaking them softens them up a little. I’m hardly ever that prepared though so either way works.

  9. was Salt left out on purpose?

      No, I think it’s a typo. Salt to taste.

  10. I’ve made this 4 times now. It’s a favorite to take to work. Thank you
