I was 10, I had a dream

Outside Chicago – My little old camera
I was a reader. Always had been. I would drag books with me everywhere and imagined all the wonderful places that I would one day visit. I would travel the world and see everything that I had read about. New York, Japan, Africa and most of all I would spend my days in Italy. Revelling in everything the culture, the people, the ancient place had to offer.
The dreams of a child don’t always come true. There is not once in my adult life where I continued my want to become prime minister. I haven’t looked back since the day I retired my tutu. But one dream still holds me. It has my heart. The dream of travelling. Immersing. And being at the places I’ve recreated in my mind through the description in books.
Bit by bit I cross the destinations off my list. I open the world a little bit more and more. I meet people and smile with them. Laugh that people, the world over, are people. And beauty is beauty. But mostly, that having a dream, something to keep with you, is essential.
What’s your dream?
Are you going to get there?

  1. Wow you are so lucky to have a dream from the age of 10 and know what you want – love your ideas of travelling and reading!CheersLisa

  2. I had a travel list from a young age too.By 25 I had ticked them all off except Prague.I now want to travel australia with my family and for some reason to visit Fiji and just do nothing. In the past that would have been a terrible idea to me, but now, oh the joy of doing nothing!

  3. Great that you are working your way through your destinations :)

  4. my dream is to become a gypsy. traveling the world, moving every 3 to 6 months, making new friends, discovering new destinations.it's never going to happen though – the love of my life is a homebody, needs roots. maybe one day.~x~

  5. I've always dreamed of Italy too. So much history, culture and BEAUTY. The architecture, the people the landscape I just love Italy. I would like to visit Ireland too.Karlene

  6. Lovely post. I have a girlfriend who since high school has had a goal of traveling to a country starting with every letter in the alphabet. She's conquering that goal pretty well.

  7. Mine was to vist at least one country on each continent before i turn 30…sadly, i'm going to fall short. I havent made it to Europe or Africa yet, and with only 2 and a bit years til i turn 30 and with a young family, it just aint gona happen! However, it doesnt mean i'm giving up – i'm just moving the goal posts and making it before i turn 40 instead!

  8. I loved reading about your dreams. I think everybody dreams but some people make the effort to make them happen. I am hoping to live on a boat and travel the beautiful islands of the world.

  9. Just the one dream for me. It's the dream to end all dreams but if I had to pick another it would be to somehow become a published author (although with limited talent and no idea what to write about that would be print worthy I think that dream is a little beyond me)Travel is another one on my list too. To be able to afford a round the world trip would be a dream come true.So glad you're pursuing your travel bug :)

  10. This is so interesting for me, when I see posts like this … because sometime over the last decade or so, I stopped dreaming. Almost everyone in the world moves by means of their dreams pushing them – and so I've just been – existing, I guess. Thank you for writing this post! Perhaps it will be revolutionary for me and others too!

  11. I think we could have been sisters in another life, all my travel dreams came from books! I always knew I wanted to see the world, there was never any doubt for me.Books Books and more Books, they were the greatest gift I could receive as a child. I remember my step dad reading me the original Jungle Book and dreaming of tigers, magic lands introduced through The Chronicles of Narnia and then The Lord of the Rings…. travel equaled magic for me!Many dreams have come true, many to come….here's to all the dreamer's ciao lisa xxx
