This morning was THE morning of THE day. The day where I would finally be rid of my slowly dying iPhone 3 and have a new shiny 4S in my hot little hands. Unfortunately THE morning of THE day started a little later than planned when the universe aligned and I had not one but TWO blog’s to install over night. After a late bedtime, sometime nearly 2am my 7.30am alarm seemed optimistic at best. And when it chirped after what felt like seconds, I knew. Snooze and I were about to become pretty close friends.
So by the time 8.20am came around to say I was a little irritable would be an understatement. 10 minute windows of sleep are stupid. Just saying. So I showered and got back to preparing for THE day. My excitement returned when I promised myself a coffee and bacon & egg McMuffin {sans cheese} before heading to the Telstra shop to pick up my baby.
And then it occurred to me. What does one WEAR to pick up the new love of their life. The new member of the family? Having purchased slightly over $70 worth of clothes from the Coles Mix Apparel range the day prior you would think my options would be endless {$70 buys you HEAPS! 2 dresses, a t-shirt, a cardie and a scarf – More about that later}. But no. I was stuck. Nothing to wear that would sufficiently signify that this was THE day.
I finally settled on my Autograph tunic, messily tucked into my navy skinny jeans with a short sleeve cardie and flats. I contemplated taking my iPad because I knew there would be a bit of a wait. I decided it was probably a bit TOO wanky. Soo I was in the Maccas drive thru saying NO CHEESE loudly through the speaker box. For, you know, the fourth time.
And then I was there!
Where the atmosphere was half party and half holy, I thought it’d be busier than this! People came and went. I monopolised a lovely ladies time while I redesigned my entire phone plan. Soon we were organising the new phone and working through all that. I people watched as I waited. There’s a lot to do when cancelling an ending next month {the 4th} contract, starting a new one, getting a phone, choosing a free case and all that.
And everywhere there were kids hopped up on these babies…
Numerous staff members offered me one. You can have some/one if you like, they’d say. And I found myself going for my recently introduced lie. No thanks, I’m fructose intolerant. Especially after the no thanks didn’t work. It’s my fall back. Rather than having to explain that I don’t eat sugar because it’s addictive and making an entire generation fat and sick and thus I don’t eat it and wow my life has changed since and I look and feel better than ever, etc etc.
I just say. I’m intolerant.
Which these days is kind of the truth. If I eat sugar {usually hidden in something I hadn’t checked labels for} I get a blinding headache and I get hungry. ALL. THE. TIME. It’s a white lie I’ve started employing because people don’t take me seriously. When I ask for the figures they brush me off or lie, flat out.
I’ve had waitresses tell me a mayonnaise is made onsite {which I will eat because no one adds sugar to mayonnaise made fresh} which is obviously store bought {and thus has added sugars for whatever reason} when it comes out. I’ve confronted a few. My requests don’t get taken seriously. So I embellish a little.
And it turns out, if it sounds medical people will bend over backwards. One lady got the chef for me so I could ask my questions {not my intention, I was horrified, during a lunch service, was she NEW at this!?}. But at least I get what I want and what I ordered. But it doesn’t sit right, to even lie by default is against my better judgement. But I do it. Because not eating sugar matters more to me.
But back to THE day. Soon my pretty arrived. The helpful Telstra Shop lady squeezed her into the shiny purple case I’d selected earlier, set the defaults so I could use it immediately and I was on my way. Me, the iPhone 4S and my THE day outfit. Back out into the sunshine and the big bad world. Just me and the pretty cruising around town in my sister’s sporty little black car. And by lunchtime, THE day was over and it was just a day like any other.
