| With a home office, you have to set some boundaries! |
I was emailing Dan today just before I went out the door to an appointment. I mentioned in the email that I was going to meet a client. An older lady who is selling off her stuff, packing up her dog and hitting the road in her motor home. She doesn’t blog. And she certainly isn’t interested in a website. So how is she a client, you might ask?
And if you didn’t, you’re going to hear anyway.
Well I ran into this lovely lady in my Gloria Jeans office. She saw me tap tap tapping away on my iPad. She was the second person that morning to approach me and ask about it. So I showed her some features, let her swish the screen around a little and soon, she had made up her mind that THIS little beauty would suit her just fine on her adventure.
Then it occurred to her that she didn’t have the slightest idea where to start. I said I’d help. No problem. Have one of my cards, call me when it arrives, we’ll meet up. She agreed that she would probably need it as she was not very savvy with computers. Then she offered to pay me to help. Noooo I said. Don’t worry about that. I’ll get you sorted out. Gave her my cards {business and blog} and off she went.
Most people don’t take me up on this offer. But my client, obviously, did. When she called she insisted that I charge her my hourly rate as I helped her order and set up her new iPad 2. No arguments. Our first meeting went well today, we got the iPad ordered and chatted over coffee and muffins. I really enjoyed being out of my house and out from behind my screen.
I mentioned this to a friend of my mother’s who said, that she would love that. She had no idea how to do a spreadsheet on her computer and could I show her. SHE would also pay. And so it begins. I am consulting. In the next month I start my round table social media workshops. Either in businesses or for group of up to 6. And it all feels so natural. Well, once I take off my newsreader voice and just settle in that is. {You have a ‘presentation voice’, go on, admit it!}
Not too shabby for the girl everyone was talking about being unemployable. Penniless. And spending what money she did have on trips to Italy sending her hard working {slaving} husband and her bankrupt. Sigh. The rumor mill, it seems, is in full flight.
So, what say you, would you book me?
