If I had a dollar for every time…

… I was asked ‘What’s a Blog!?’ with a questioning look and an envious stare at the goodies in the mail, I would be a wealthy women. And the same goes for the amount of times I have stumbled over an explanation. A rationalisation. A way to describe Blog, Bloggers and the whole world of it.
The word blog seems to confuse people. It’s a website, I’d stammer. A personal journal of sorts. A place to deliver information. It is a resource. Or a read, like a magazine. It’s different for everyone. And about my blog in particular; It is a place I record my life, the stories and photos. It’s my little piece of the internet to share whatever I want.
But that just confuses them more.

Why would anyone want to read that {My thoughts exactly!} they ask. Aren’t you worried about who reads it? What if there is a stalker type person lurking in the background {well, we can hope! Ha. Stalkers HAVE to be good for blog page views, right!?}. I don’t get it but good on you. They say in some form or another before changing the subject.

How do you explain the community of Bloggers? The way that virtual strangers become friends and rally when the chips are down. Or up, for that matter. When they support you and compliment you and welcome you for who you are when no one in your life seems to take the time to care. How do you sum THAT up?
And how to you encapsulate the opportunity it is for businesses and brands to work with bloggers. How do you explain the new wave of consumer is looking for information. Delivered to them when they want it, but personally. How do you explain that it is worth a business spending hundreds {if not thousands!} nurturing those relationships through the medium that is bloggers?
It’s my fault, I know. I should have a clear idea of what I want to say when people ask. But I want to convey it all. What my blog is and means to me. What yours are and mean to you. As well as the community and the opportunity that there is for commerce {of varying levels} and good business nous.
Help me out would you. How would you say all of that and more.
How do you explain what a blog is?

  1. When people ask me about what a blog is, I just tell them, its a website where I record my families person journey, where I post photos, dump the feelings in my head and sometimes give away things for free! That last bit always makes them curious to want the website address! Thats why I keep cards in my bag now! LOL

  2. *sigh* I know what you mean. I'm the only person I know in my family or circle of friends that blogs or is even familiar with it. I'm not sure most of the people I know actually read them. This makes it incredibly frustrating to describe what, why and how I do it. Inevitably the question, 'so do you make any money from it' comes up. I end up not talking about it much (which is silly) cause some people make me wanna punch myself around the head with my mouse. Don't get me started on Twitter though – cause that makes people even more confused! lol

  3. Ugh, YES! I encounter this question at *least* twice a week but still, even three years later, never have a clue how to answer it…

  4. "When they support you and compliment you and welcome you for who you are when no one in your life seems to take the time to care." Love that line. I really love this post. I think you summed up the blogging world really well!

  5. I honestly do no t bother anymore. Those that get it, get it. Those that don't are missing out. They will get there eventually.I just consider myself an early adopter…xx

  6. This post has been removed by the author.

  7. The only person who ever really asks me is my mum – and as loveable as she is, she is just not EVER going to get the whole blogging thing. I just tell her its a place where i get to write about stuff, and commune with other like minded people and, more importantly, post pictures of her grandson…

  8. I never really asked. I understand it to a degree. I think it just the way the world is going with advertising it is more focused and people are more willing to read blogs they enjoy. I like the fact that you can put things out there that you wouldn't ordinarily tell people and get support from people you don't even know.

  9. Like Lucy, I've given up. It's too hard and then people who don't read them still think it's weird.I think it's weird.WEIRD IN THE MOST AWESOME WAY!!! Ha ha ha

  10. I have also given up. I usually hand them my card and tell them to take a look. Find out for yourself. hahaSome people just need to get online more. ;)

  11. Right, survey says; Give Up!! :D

  12. Most of my family and friends know what blogs are so I don't have to try and explain, but they just don't get why anyone would want to spend hours writing and reading blogs. I have one daughter who also blogs, but everyone else just isn't interested. They have "better" things to do than sit by a computer and read about people they don't know. The thing is, I feel like I do know you all, so I'll continue to blog and read, in spite of others thinking I'm odd.

  13. Blog is short for Weblog so it's easier to just say it's a log of your life, what you do and what you believe:) If you want to get into that!

  14. I always say that a blog is kinda of like diary of sorts. Just writing down stuff from in my life that I want to share. Most people don't really get it, but funnily enough I've discovered that all my friends read it even thought they think I'm wasting my time. The questions I ALWAYS struggle with is "what do you blog about?"ummm….everything??…

  15. I have a hard enough time explaining my work let alone my blog. I always end up saying something dumb like 'I kinda sew stuff..for kids" uh huh. One of my extended family made reference to my blog the other day (clearly I didn't know that they read it!) and I totally freaked out. I love to blog but struggle with owning up to blogging :/
