I’m not here.

I’m baking a rainbow birthday cake. For myself. Do you have any tips for me? From what I can see of the tutorials it’s a simple cake batter split into bowls and coloured to within an inch of it’s life. I have to decide if I want to bake it into layers or swirl it together. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions.

Plus this will be the first thing I get to cross off my 20 in 2011 list. How are your resolutions going?

  1. I think that the much, much more important question is how will you get a piece of it down to me in Brisbane?

  2. I love Rainbow Cake! You have to do it in layers!Oh, and you know what the funny thing is? I'm dressing up as Rainbow Brite for my 30th party on Sat :P

  3. AND will you photograph the result for us? I am dying to make one of these, they look so divine, just need the right occasion. Oh and my vote is for layers!

  4. When you put the dye in the batter, it will not look bright usually, esp blues and greens. If you add too much colour it wont look as bright and awesome after the cake is cooked.

  5. Oh wow.. I have never seen one in layers like this.. MUST TRY!

  6. Gorgeous! Mail me a piece too. But don't swirl the colors together. We'd have a muddy looking cake!Sandra

  7. You've inspired me to have a go at this! Its not your first thing off your list…curves anyone??So excited for your birthday!

  8. Soooo. It turns out I only had one cake tray and limited patience. Soooo. I poured each colour into the mould {ditched the tray all together} one by one and didn't stir. It looks all swirly though not it's baked. Photos to come. Need to ice it, cut it etc.

  9. Looks lovely and fun! But if its just colored, wouldn't it taste weird when you expect them to taste like their color, but they don't? Just wondering, 'coz it reminds me of tricky foods that taste different from what you expect. Lol!

  10. Thanks for a great idea!! My birthday is next month and I'm going to make myself a rainbow cake!! And I think I may just go your route and bake them swirled. I'm not one for big productions.

  11. Hahaha! Marie. classic. I know what you mean. Blue foods annoy me. What freakin' flavour is THAT supposed to be!?

  12. Bake it in layers!!! I've made this a few times now and it is the best thing in the world. Not only do I grease and flour the pans, but I also cut out circles of wax paper and line the bottoms before pouring in the batter, it makes getting the cake out soooo much easier. I LOVE this cake, it is a family favorite! ENJOY :)

  13. This looks amazing!! I would have said layers too, but it'll be interesting to see how it turns out the way you've done it.

  14. What a beautiful post! Thank you for sharing!

  15. It looks great! Hope it tasted as good as it looks.I made one for my daughter's birthday last year. My only (belated!) tip is to buy the good food colourings from a proper cake place.http://airfirewaterearth.blogspot.com/search?q=rainbow
