| See, I’m a tool. Make you feel better? |
So as I shuffle along organising my first ever blogger meetup in a city {Brisbane, FYI} that is located over 2 hours north of my home I am struck by one thing in particular. One teensy, tiny thing. People are really nervous about coming. Me, I’m nervous that it will be a collisional flop. But people, they are nervous about meeting new people, especially the large group effect. Large numbers of NEW people.
So I thought I’d share this excercise I did once to help you get past some of those nerves. It ended up that when I started typing I really didn’t know how it went, so this is my version. Some of you might recognise it. Ready. Let’s go, Oh and I’ve numbered them for easy reference back between imagining/visualizing;
- Imagine it is just you and the people people in the room you are in now. And allow the feelings come to the surface. You may be nervous, or comfortable. Cautious or open. Feel them all.
- Next imagine all the people in your street, or block. They are all there. Feel the feelings. Are you nervous now? Are there more strangers. Maybe you know all your neighbours, no biggy. Maybe the thought makes you want be be sick. Keep going.
- Now imagine all the people in your town are there. Again feel the feelings. What are you thinking? Stay with this until you are ready to move on.
- Repeat the above step for the whole of Australia and for the world. Imagine all the people in all the world are there looking at you. Are you afraid. Terrified? Nervous? Mostly, are you afraid!? Most people would be. Very, very afraid. Most adults rate public speaking above death as the most terrifying thing.
- And now, take a deep breathe because I have some good news. Look into the imagined, faceless crowd, are they looking back at you? What do you imagine they are thinking. What are you thinking? You are thinking, I assert, about them thinking about you. And you know what. They are too. Because THEY ARE AFRAID OF YOU! BOOOO.
That means YOU are the most terrifying person the the whole planet! Now doesn’t that make you feel better? Now that you’re a little bit over it. Come and party with me and the others {some I know and some new faces!} at the
