Personal Blogger: What’s the point!?

Often enough I am asked what my blog is about, what I write about and why. Often I say stuff and just because. But there really isn’t a point, I guess. no reason why. No purpose. Nothing. It is a log of my life. Photos and things I like. Stories and rants. Links and love. There is no point.
It’s like a scrapbook. On blogger.
But how I wish I was a fashion blogger, or a travel blogger or a writer with a blog. I wish I was a foodie or a mummy or a crafty blogger. I wish I was anything that fit anywhere. Then maybe, there would be a point. And then, there is this dream, I have, of writing for a living, being able to work from home again. To have my time be my own. Again.
But to do that, all the experts say to have a niche, a theme or to make people care. I can’t help but think I could never make that work. I am too prone to laying it all out bare, randomly, to plan that sort of onslaught. I wouldn’t even know where to start limiting this blog to one or two topics. I think I would be disappointed and miss the others.
So I guess this blog will never have a point.
Unless i say it does. So what is the point? There is none, but here are some I came up with;
  1. To remind myself how fun life is
  2. To document my moments in this life
  3. To encourage others to enjoy themselves, to laugh and to have fun
  4. To express myself through writing
  5. To laugh at myself
  6. To collect pretty things
  7. To share my life with as many people as I can
  8. to leave an impression

So there you go. Some things I made up about the point of personal blogging. I made them up. But for me, they are real. Perhaps you’d like to tell us the point of your blog? I’d love to hear it, whether it be in the comments or an entire post {leave me the link, won’t you}.

  1. Personally, I think you and me blog the same. I don't think I really fit anywhere. Exactly like you said, I'm not a mum, a foodie, fashion guru or travel writer [etc]. I'm just me. Random, everything and fun.xps. Nothing to add. That's pretty much why I blog. Mainly for me, to remember!

  2. Hi :D I think that having no point is perhaps a million times more important than HAVING a point (because some of those people feel like they have to blog, and it can come across a bit fake and rushed – and I don't like that). Also I think when you have a focus it kind of pre-determines your path whereas if you make it up as you go along, it's more like a journey, which is what life is anyway. In conclusion: I agree and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

  3. That's why my blog is currently called BabbleOn, cos that's what I do, no real theme, I guess I am a mummy blogger technically, but I like to think I am more than that…just not sure what.

  4. The point is, for me, and for you, sharing. That is huge. It is enough. It is delcicious. Just share. xx

  5. I've been thinking about this too — there doesn't seem to be a name for us. We need to name and claim our niche, I think!I like the way I never know what to expect when I call in here. There's always something different (and I don't just mean the background)Wouldn't it be kind of BORING to blog about just one or two topics?

  6. My blog does have a point…well it mostly does (some days I do just ramble on a bit). It is to keep me accountable in my goal to do something meaningful everyday – to make sure that I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. Check out my first ever post for a slightly more articulate explanation :-)xxxCatehttp://keepcatebusy.blogspot.com/2010/09/day-1-start-blog.html

  7. Another thought provoking post, Melissa.I vote that we call ourselves 'life bloggers'. Defined by the aims of writing for personal enjoyment, creating a record of our lives and at the same time giving our readers a chance to reflect on their own. If we are moved enough by current affairs of the day, we also write about these from a personal viewpoint. The huge secondary benefits of our kind of blogs are the wonderful people who really connect with your blog and become friends as well. On a more personal level, my blog reminds me of how far I've come (or not) with particular events and issues in my life. SSG xxxSydney Shop Girl blog

  8. My blog started of with a purpose as it was supposed to be a shared blog for 2 friends on a weight loss journey living in different cities. But seeing as she wasn't really into blogging and I was a total Bleek, I claimed it changed the name and now it's much like yours, an online scrap book of my life. I blog about many things, my weekly weightloss and any trials that come with that, my crafts, kids, life in general. I've borrowed a few ideas from other peoples blogs like the 30 days of me.I think personal blogs are awesome, and I love reading yours every day xox

  9. I decided I needed to work out a purpose for my blog when I started running out of inspiration for posts. I needed to decide if I even wanted to blog any more, given the massive demands on my time this year! Having given it a lot of thought, I do want to keep blogging and although my blog still won;t have a consistent theme, at least I now know what purpose it serves for me on a personal level.

  10. Reason #1 is enough for me! I get that question all the time, which means people are reading my blog. So, I ask them, what is the point of reading my blog? They say they enjoy it, so I guess that really I blog for myself and others.

  11. I've been thinking about the point of my blog too, and what "niche" I fit. There must be something in the air…I've decided I'm a personal blogger of the non-mummy variety. We're starting a non-parent sub-group on AMB: http://aussiemummybloggers.com/group/nonparents?xg_source=msg_wel_group

  12. Just discovered your blog! I have only recently started blogging and waffle on about nothing in particular – whatever takes my fancy. I think one of the main reasons I started to blog was because I felt a bit like a stalker, reading blogs but not really contributing anything in return.

  13. Look at all us 'life' bloggers! For those with active email links on your comments I've replied to you direct. Otherwise just know, I get it. Not fitting anywhere all together kinda makes us fit.

  14. I think your niche is kind of having no niche, if that makes sense. Your blog is very unique and I presume very you! There are lots of niche bloggers out there but only one Suger Coat It.

  15. I like your points about your point. Personal blogging is the best niche in my opinion because you don't have to be restricted.

  16. this is how I blog as well…unrestricted with only the limits of my imagination! seriously, it's the best way to blog.

  17. I tell people I blog about lide, love and so much more.

  18. Melissa, I LOVE your blogging explanation! How magnificent! It perfectly describes the reasons that I blog, as well :) When people used to quiz me what Frock & Roll was about I used to get all tongue-tied and usually blurt out ''uh… crap that takes my fancy?!'' – until a friend pointed out how awful that sounded! :p I've since amended it to ''well… LIFE! And beauty! And fashion! And business! And blogging! And, well… FUN!''
