When Hubby ditched me on New Years day he was heading north-west to visit his family. He had plans to stop by and help out as many relatives as he could get to that had been flooded. Being true born and bred Queenslanders, everyone we know is here. From Guru {near Townsville} in the North, to Emerald and Rockhampton all the way down to Theodore and Mundubbera where his grandmother’s home was under water. So he did what he could, go to those he could and came home.
And then it really started raining in these parts. Big rain. What we Gympie locals call flood rain. Constant. Heavy. And widespread in the catchment area. And soon we were preparing for a flood of our own. We waited Saturday as the river went up and were amazed Sunday morning when it had fallen a little again. Short lived though it was and by Monday morning we had hit major flood levels (17m) and rising.
At 15.9m our last bridge to get to Gympie central was cut. Hubby and I in our residential estate on the Southside {actually called this because it is South of the river because actually it is West of Gympie, but anyways}. High and dry and stuck. And here we still are, and as I write this the rain continues. But the river is dropping. Slowly.
Now we haven’t lost anything of any real value. Simply the time to be able to earn an income {we are both self employed – Hubby in landscaping me as a contract property manager}. And we need to be able too. But we are lucky. Lucky that is all we have lost. My family and friends are safe and well. I know only a handful who’s homes are impacted.
And now we send our thoughts to our Southern neighbours at Toowoomba, Cabollture, Brisbane and Ipswich as they battle their battle. It will never leave me, the memory of that footage out of Toowoomba. Never. And I report again that all those I know in the areas are safe and well and accounted for. Didn’t I tell you all that I was blessed. Well it is true. And I believe it more today.
So I’ll leave you with some photos from My Town. The beautiful, charming and resilient Gympie. We hope when all this is said and done you will come and visit us. I’ll show you around myself. That is how we recover. People in our cafes and shops. Visitors in our motel beds. Money in our registers…
