You say Ad Whore, I say Internet Savvy

Work it baby…
Over the past two days I have seen two bloggers I read and love that have had boooooo’s directed at them for having ads or sponsored posts on their blogs. One was told e’nuff already and another was told that her blog had gone commercial and that she was a whore for ad money. I wanted to direct my very own boo at them, but of course, they were commenting anonymously. {Aren’t they all}.
I reacted a bit physically to both. What a load of rubbish. As long as I can read the content easily I really don’t care how many ads you have on one or both of your sidebars. And as far as sponsored posts, well if I am not interested I don’t click through from my reader or if I am at the blog I scroll down. No biggie. And if there is something of interest to me, I click and read just as I would if it was a google ad on a search page.
Now the way I see it, if there is no content, then no one is coming to check it out. Low traffic means less likelihood of sponsors and it all unravels. I often unfollow blogs that no longer have relevant content. Or interesting stuff. Or that run more giveaways than they have posts. And THAT is the choice of a blog reader, of any reader of anything. Too many ads, too little content and people walk. And that is bad for business.
So really, advertising and sponsor paid posts will ultimately lead to better content if the blog owner is smart. If you think it about. THAT is good news for everybody. The only time that I thought I may actually fit in with the blog advertising poo poo’ers was when there is a multi blog promotion and ALL my favourite blogs were flogging the same thing. And no one had anything else to blog about. That was a sad day. Though if I win the comp, well, I’ll take that back. But that’s the only down side I can see.
But I was thinking about why other’s are less ok with this, less welcoming and often snippy about it. And I can think is maybe they are jealous..?! I know it might be a stretch but I know that sometimes when bloggers are being paid to do cool things. given free stuff or sponsored to go the ultra cool blogging events that I would loooove to attend, I get a little twinge of jealousy. Like, I wish that was me. I wish I got those kind of offers.
Or maybe they are simply the rage against the corporations type. Who knows. But there you are. A bit of a confession, a point of view and a bit of an insight into the working of my scattered brain. What do you think? What’s your opinion of paid posts, sponsors and all that jazz? I’d love to hear all about it.

  1. I say good on them! If I could figure out how to get paid for blogging I would do it in a second – what a brilliant way to make an income!

  2. I say good on them. Alot of my favourite blogs have paid advertising on them. Like you have put so well, if there is stuff on there that you want to read, you read it, advertising or no advertising. What does get my annoyed radar going though, is flashing ad's everywhere, like between posts, both sides of the content or those even more annoying ones that pop up whilst your reading… in saying that though, even though its annoying, if the content is worth reading I still stick around and read.

  3. I wish I had more than 3 people even reading/following my blog – then being an ad whore might be a remote possibility. Oh well…

  4. If someone has a blog popular enough to warrant sponsors, and those sponsors give them free stuff and ask that they advertise it, then that's great! Many blogs I follow are art/craft/designn blogs, so they often have Etsy shops or real life shops, and they're very successful. So they have sponsors on their blog (which, by the way, is commonly an advertising space for their shop and not solely a personal blog). Of these blogs, my favourites are the ones who set aside a particular day to showcase their sponsors, instead of constant posting throughout the week/month.What does irk me, though, is banner advertisements that earn the blogger money per click (similar to the one you have!) because I get so bombarded by advertising every day that when I sit down to relax and read my blogs I don't like being advertised even more! But, that's just me. :)

  5. Megan, I did wonder if the banner ad was annoying people. I guess the answer is yes, some of them. But I'm not removing it now, I LOVE Movember. Ha! :oD

  6. I made comments on Lori's blog, but it was along the lines of my blog, my choice and your choice to read or not. Obvious. But maybe just maybe we're missing something here too and that is that in a very clumsy, insensitive, dopey way, the poopooers are giving a compliment and saying – I really enjoy reading what you have to say and I miss it when it's not there. Do they have a right to say that in a righteous manner …. I don't think so. But, there you have it!

  7. I've always said I'd never have advertising on my blog – that's my personal choice, if others want to on theirs, well that's their choice! Will I ever change my stance on this? Who knows but right now it doesn't sit right with me.What does irk me, is bloggers who get paid to do stuff, get free stuff and in all honesty they don't write very well. That really does shit me. I have no issue with this if a blogger is a good writer but there are some shockers out there who get this free stuff and I sit and scratch my head and wonder why?I also wish companies etc would open their eyes and realise there are bloggers out there OTHER than mummybloggers.

The more popular a blog > the more traffic > the more attractive that blog is to potential advertisers. I know that it's a reality of blogging, but the whole thing just bothers me. Oh well.Melissa: It's your blog and you're free to put WHATEVER you like on it. Don't remove banner advertisements because some of us don't like them! I simply scroll past it. I think the reason it annoys me is only because the ads featured are often ads that have been over-saturated on the telly already.P.S. Apologies for the couple mistakes in my last post. I was typing fast as I had to leave for work! I know no one else cares, but I do! :)

  9. Well jealousy is certainly one angle, but there is also the Tall Poppy Syndrome … alive and well I think. I too get a little annoyed at pop up windows and the like, but sponsored posts and giveaways, as long as they are not the only posts, then good on the bloggers for making a little cash doing what they love.

  10. i have sold as space and the only people who had a problem with it was my family…LOL. we all started blogging to keep up with each other, blogging took a different turn for me than it did for them…so call me a sell out or an ad whore…i call it my blog and i am happy with it!!followed you over from April's thread on FB.

  11. I love you, you know that? Yes, you do. I love you. You is awesome. Thankyou xoxoxox

  12. I don't mind static ads but I also find animations distracting from content. Then again, I use Firefox with Adblock Plus so rarely see any traditional advertising on the net. Can't avoid product placement though ;)
