Isn’t using a metal detector in a school yard illegal..?

Stealing from children… Nice!
Well if it isn’t, I think it should be. I saw this guy today, in the school grounds of a school I drive past a number of times a day. He was there all day, metal detecting. The oval. The sandpit. The pathways between school. And he was there all day. Well, every time I passed there today.

And I was like, what the hell are you doing.

How lucrative could it possibly be to go hunting for metallic objects in a school yard. And then I pictured the number of items I had lost, misplaced or left behind when I was a kid. So the answer is probably VERY lucrative.

But then, that stuff, it belongs to the children at the school. Obviously. It is not like a beach where hundreds or thousands of randoms converge, do their things and disperse. If you were to find jewellery the owner would most likely go to or teach at the school.

So that makes it stealing. In my books. And stealing from children at that!

Now for all I know one of metal detecting guy may have children at this school and his children may have lost a valuable family artifact that he was looking for. So random guy loitering within the school ground, i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. THIS time. So, you’ve been warned.

Do it again and I’m calling the cops. If for no other reason than, it’s weird.

  1. You should check with the school first. Maybe they've hired him and anything he finds goes to the lost and found in the office.

  2. my dad used to do it when i was competing with the horses all over the state, but it was even worst when he did it on a trip to fraser island with his under water metal detector. Extremely embarrassing, i pretended i didn't know him, on the up side he found over $200 in coins and great heap of wedding rings and other jewellery.

  3. I agree with River, I'd check with the school and even then if it was in school hours and the school had no problem with him being on school grounds well….and they would have noticed him, most schools have gardeners working the grounds etc or staff walking around. As for the stealing – hmmm not sure about that, if it's lost then some say it's a case of finders keepers BUT then I guess it depends on what is found?Did he have a "wrong" look about him?

  4. The school is closed for the holidays… And maybe I am the only one who thought it was strange.

  5. No, i think that's really strange. Probably not illegal, apart from the trespassing- but very, very odd!!

  6. I agree that is very, very strange. I don't blame you for wanting to call the police.

  7. I doubt he would find much around my school yard. Maybe a few Chinese toys lined with lead. But I would still wonder what the hell, because really, what the hell?

  8. There are crazy people in this town!!That's nuts.

  9. Totally agree! With a GF and kids last week at a local park. Same thing, guy spent the full 2 hours we were there metal detecting. Picking up, I dunno, must have been no more that 5 bucks in coins? Bonus! Or maybe if he really scored, some poor unfortunate woman's treasured ring. Which make the whole thing profiteering off someone else's misfortune that doesn't sit right with me. Because I am sure he's not fronting up to the local Cop Shop to report a found item in that case.Left little piles of dug up dirt and tanbark behind him everywhere. Seems an obsession this metal detecting to some old geezers. Try the local bowls club, at least that is sociable and note weird and a bit creepy of a hobby!

  10. creepy and a little wrong. At least it wasn't while there were kids there ?P.S. I just blogged about you xx

  11. Yes, I also think it is strange. If he found anything it should be turned into the school's lost and found. If he's not working for the school I don't think he should be there. It's strange and creepy!
