I’ve got that retro feeling…

You’ve heard that line of that song that says I like your old stuff better than your new stuff… right? How could you not, I was very specific right now, referencing it and all. Well I’ve been thinking about it this week and I think it has finally happened to me. I like old stuff better than new stuff. that makes sense right. And this was just never the case for me.
I loved new stuff. New car smell. Shiny new shoes (curse you blisters). Latest technology. And there was a time, however brief, that I preferred latest fashions to basic classics. Maybe it was the mini consumer and marketer in me that loved the accumulation of it all. Maybe it was the seemingly endless supply of money thanks to my minimal responsibilities and financial commitments. Or possibly, I just preferred new.
Now, as I glance over at Hubby perched on the retro couch, I love it. I never sit on it at the moment because it is bloody freezing on the vinyl surfaces but I love it. And how unique it is. At some stage, I got over mass produced (my love for Ikea though, will never die) and started looking for stuff that said something. Even if what it was shouting was what a dag I am.
So what about you? What do you prefer to buy new. What is your favourite retro find or item or thing to shop for. Do you like the old stuff better than the new stuff or is the whole thing romanticised to make us feel better about having to buy old crap because the budget is stretched to within an inch of its life? You tell me. Go on.
Oh. And let me just be very, very clear indeed… I will never not be a new fangled techno nerd. Give me wireless internet and a spreadsheet any day and I am a happy, happy girl.

  1. I am an oldie but a goodie kind of girl.I have a nursing chair that has fed 4 generations. I have old arts that I adore. Lovely husband and I used to trawl aution houses for old furniture….I scored an art deco table for $5 that was painted in pale lilac matt paint. Which is now back in its original glory, adorning our hallway……

  2. When I was really low, and at home in Gympie, Dad came home from time away seeing clients, and brought me a c. 1930's boudoir mirror from an antique shop in Gayndah. It has 4 little rivets for lipsticks. It's been to hell and back with me – at dancing school in Melbourne, and all the way to 27 with me. I adore things with a story; always will. xoxo

  3. Oh, now you know my answer to this… Retro all the way baby. I love things with character, history and charm. I also love the odd new thing: my car and its 'still new' smell. But I love, love, love retro styling. That's why I NEEDED the KitchenAid rather than a Sunbeam mixer – and why my NEW bike {squeee} looks like it's popped out of the 1950s in the South of France. {Le sigh…}I'd say our house has a good mix of items spanning the centuries – and that's just the way I like it.
