Art is Art is Art…. Right..?!

{photo, yep, you guessed it, we heart it.com}

I was flicking through weheartit looking for images. You see, I love to add to my stash for when the urge takes me to write. And I loooove looking through them, so beautiful. And I came across this. It’s Audrey Hepburn, who in my opinion, was one of the good ones. So lovely and charming and beautiful and grounded. Did you know she trained to be a ballerina..? Oh how I love her. Anyway. The point.
Art. And what makes art, art?
Because I, would gladly, put this on my wall. Any day of the week. My walls are covered in photo collages, self painted canvas’s, the paintings I picked up in South Africa with their matching extras that were painted by my cousin, a white board covered in photos and postcards and the blackboard wall covered in business type chalk scribblbings. And is that what makes something art? That someone puts in on a wall?
My opinion… Are you ready for it? Is that art is whatever I (or you) say it is. I adore photography, crafting and painting. And I don’t like ceramics, or decoupage or most sculptures but that doesn’t make them less arty. I love a good promotional postcard. I love them like someone loves their stupid painting of a shearer and some stinky old sheep.
And while I’m on the subject of Art being whatever, I also think something like a blog can be art. Aesthetically pleasing and creative and a collage of a bundle of wonderful things. My dear friend Rianna’s blog is a perfect example of this. You’ve been there right? The Last Doll Standing. Be there or be square. Go there and tell me that isn’t art. Seriously. The collection of stunning fashion images is amazing. It looks pretty darn good, if I do say so myself and her taste is immaculate. Officially art in my opinion.
But does that make it soooooo?
I was watching a program the other day (in passing, so I have no idea what it was) and it encouraged the discussion of art. In fact it said that the discussion is more important than the medium or the method of delivery or whatever. That art IS a conversation. I couldn’t get this out of my head… Because after all, doesn’t every single darn thing human exist in the realm of conversation. So of course our artistic expression, creativity and art must be measured by the conversation it generates. Total agree on my behalf.
It’s sort of all inclusive to say it is all art if someone says it is. And I like that. The diversity that encapsulated by that statement. And even as I say it I cringe to call some of the crap I saw at this website the other day art. But that’s the point isn’t it. It is whatever we say it is. I say it’s crap. They say it’s modern, progressive, award winning  art.
So, what do you think? When it comes to art and creative expression, what do you like and what don’t you like? Do you do anything creative or arty that you have had to defend as art?
There you go. That’s what was on my mind today.

  1. This post bought me back to my Uni days when I had to write a thesis on this exact topic. What is art? Its like one of those philosophical questions that goes round and round in your head with no end in sight.For me (as a self-proclaimed artist), art is something that will affect your senses or emotions. So in thinking that way, conversation could even be deemed as art. What I sense as Art could be deemed as junk by another person, but thats the beauty in it I suppose, being able to have your own rules in the sense of things. (Oh gee, thinking in the sense of things, I hope that makes sense!!)Thanks for stopping by my blog as well. xx

  2. I think of art as anything created by humans, which inspires or emotivates*.*just made that word up. It must be art =D

  3. Thanks Babe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the observation that art is a conversation; I completely agree with that. Aesthetics are a very interesting area of study, because you'd think that what people like looking at would be the most subjective thing in the world, but the fact is that a number of philosophers have argued that aesthetics should not be subjective, and that people 'ought' to find something beautiful. I think the question of what is art and what is beautiful will fascinate me for the rest of my life, so I'm stoked that you have strong opinions on it too. xoxo

  4. When studying art one of the first things you're taught is that art is a discussion and that art should provoke discussion. Art is supposed to be discussed.The way an artwork is created and what's used to create it is a story.People view art together and talk about it. What they like or don't like, how it makes them feel and what they think the artist is trying to convey.So many stories! I love art. And I totally agree with you re a blog being art. I see my blog as art, because when I don't have a chance to paint or decorate in another form, I blog. :)

  5. I think, like beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder. I don't like the notion that art is somehow elite and only for those who are enlightened enough to recognise it. And, yeah, totally a blog can be art.BYW — thanks Melissa, for visiting my sister today! that was VERY nice of you.

  6. Art is subjective, and it all comes down to perception. One man's art is another man's garbage so to speak which is why I can't understand how art can be studied as a subject that you are then marked on. Art history sure, but the actual art you create yourself? I don't believe it should be marked at all. I think art can be anything you want, and I don't necessarily believe that art always has to make a point, which I guess is the beauty of art. Nothing wrong with appreciating something purely coz it's cute or colourful, doesn't always have to make you think, and I think that's the true value of art, how it makes you feel. All you need to do is look at modern art to realise that art can be anything, and good or bad art is totally based on your own personal perceptions.

  7. I know nothing about art. I just know what I do and don't like. I know that I don't like that picture. Couldn't possibly say why, just…don't like it.Guess it doesn't speak to me.
