Whoah Nanna

This is a Nanna. Just as Nanna’s should be. Sweet, plump, near sighted, and dressed like Grannie in the Beverly Hill Billies. Perfect. Or so I say.
You see poor me, I was grandmother’less by the time I was twenty years old. I only knew my father’s mother as my mother’s mother passed away before I was born. And my grandmother, she baked and cooked and made tea just as a grandmother should. Though once, I swear, she called me a slut. Or slutty. I don’t remember now. So I wasn’t exactly in love with the grandmother idea. I was pretty happy with the way things were.
And that point was reinforced the other weekend as my cousin and I made pumpkin scones. Well, she made them, I was in charge of driving us to our location. And mid way she ran out of flour and we had to go because we were running late. So we bundled the scone mixture into a water tight container and headed over to her Mum’s house. Her Nanna was there.
As we unpacked the other goodies in the car her Mum set about finishing and baking the scones. Her Nanna gave directions from the table. Why was the mix so wet? Did she not know that she wasn’t supposed to add other wet ingredients? And why hadn’t she finished them yet… Don’t add too much flour. Heat the pan. Turn up the oven. And what the hell where you thinking making such a large batch!
I was in stitches. Literally laughing out loud but hidden behind my hand, of course, not excited to bring the Nanna wrath down on my own head. My cousin, she looked less impressed. Though she may have been upset at me for finding the whole thing so amusing. And when the Nanna left. I did just about the best impression of my life.
You see, I may not have a Nanna, but I can do an excellent Nanna impression.

  1. That Nanna sounds like my Granny. Who I miss more than I ever dreamed I would.Every convo started with "Well…." (arms folded over big boobs, mouth pursed like a cats bum) "Well, if I was you, young lady……….." Argggggh. But, I miss her. Miss her big time.

  2. Now THAT I would have liked to see! My surviving Grandmother was extremely colourful. Think you have given my my Memoir Monday topic!

  3. Hilarious! And Pumpkin scones sound awesome. Is that an Australian thing? Mmmm.

  4. *puts on nanna cap*.. how could anyone run out of flour halfway through? Did you not measure your ingredients before you began? Ha HaI didn't know either of my grandmas. From what I've heard of them, I didn't miss a thing. I do have both of their names as my middle names.

  5. I have finally just read this one! It is funny! And yes it is ok to make the pumpkin scone batch around how much pumpkin you mashed. Lol! Triney

  6. She sounds fun to me! My last grandparent died when I was 14. To be honest, I didn't know him well either – he lived a 5-hr drive away. Two of my grandparents had died before I was born, the other was my maternal grandmother, and I remember a little of her. She taught me to tie my shoe laces and she was writing a children's book in a red book. I guess that's where I get my love of writing from, huh? ;) She died when I was 7. I was fortunate though to witness a great relationship between my parents and my niece & nephew – my sister's kids (who are my age). They remain close today, and I think, very lucky to still have their grandparents around. x

  7. Man – we think alike yet again. Didn't realise you posted this link until after I posted mine.Kinda poetic as you provided the inspiration for said post in the first place, lol.

  8. I've been lucky to have a sweet grandma … then again, I never tried to make scones in front of her. It might have been a different story. Scones are very serious business to CWA members. :)

  9. I've got no Nannas either. And my scones will always be hopeless because of it. But my Grandma was an awesome cook and thanks to her I at least know where to start! Thanks for Rewinding at the Fibro.

  10. We had Grandmothers… never Nannas. I think a lot of older ladies get over critical… comes with the hormones and being beaten down by life. Did I just say that!?!?Every time I come here your blog looks different! The many moods of Sugar Coat It! x

  11. lmao..thats funny…sounds just like my gran!!
