Super Mario Brothers, An Obsession.

When I was a kid, my brother and I lived in the rooms under the family home. Here, we had freedom, a bathroom, a section each for our bedrooms and a shared ‘living room’. And what was permanently connected to the trusty old TV in that living room? The original Nintendo gaming system, of course! And though we had a collection of games to rival most gaming stores there was one that we loved above all others.

Yes. Those crazy Italian siblings. The Super Mario Brothers. Ahhh.

We played and played until we finally finished the entire thing and arose, bleary eyed and victorious. It took us a long time by some people’s standards but we did it. We reigned supreme. And come to think of it I can’t recall every trying to finish it again. I think that maybe, it was complete for me.  That that chapter of my life was closed never to be reopened.

And then, it happened! (is it just me or do I say that a lot!?)

Super Mario Brothers on Wii. And the memories came flooding back, the competitive desire to race through the stages, taking no prisoners, saving the day, the freedom and excitement we experienced living in our own domain when most parents wouldn’t let their kids walk home from school by themselves. The joy of it all.

So now we play, we play as a group (4 player option is awesome btw!), we play alone, we play during the day and late into the night. On Christmas day we played for six and a half hours! And we’re getting there. It’s all coming back to us. The skills we gained as children. Like riding a bike.

And now, it’s on like Donkey Kong… we’re finishing this game, and soon, if it kills us! Hubby and I, the perfect team, taking on the world. Mario’s world anyway.

See? That’s the obsession part..
