Welcome Summer, My Dear Friend!

The weathers turned hot here… REALLY hot and it appears to have taken me and my red, flushed face by surprise.

It must have been turning this way for a while but I didn’t notice. You see I was tucked away in an air-conditioned paradise from early morning only to emerge at dusk. Standing in the car park I would breathe deeply the smell of Christmas beetles and wonder when the really hot days would start. Apparently (according to Hubby) they already had.

Summer in Queensland is a very unique experience; let me see if I can create it for you…

The air gets so hot it’s annoying to breathe. Outdoors the sun burns your skin in less than 15 minutes. Unless you saw it you’d never believe that the sky could be so blue and cloudless and bright; so bright it hurts your eyes. Our dinky vegetable garden goes mad with the combination of belting sun and pouring rains. Early evenings and late afternoons are often spent watching awe inspiring electrical storms before sheltering from the dumping rains…

Ahhhh it’s lovely and my favourite time of the year.

It’s after 8pm now and the air is so still the whole world seems silent. The rhythmic tick of the ceiling fan combines with the tap of the blinds against the window frames. The tile floor is cool and I want to lie on it. The heat of my laptop is uncomfortable against the tops of my legs. The sweat beads under my newly cut fringe and I wonder if my sister was right when she said that side fringes work better for the summer.  I’m wondering now where the storm we were promised to break the heat is, as I contemplate a restless night sleep in the heat.

Oh yes, my friends, summer has arrived.

What’s your favourite summer experience, thought or feeling? I’d love to hear it. Share it below.
