I went to a Social Media Workshop.

Yesterday. It was hosted by the Gympie Women in Business. A group I’ve watched from afar but never really jump on board with before. Nothing against them, more me being me. You know how it is. But I am SO glad I went. I mean, SO glad. There was the workshop, then a gorgeous lunch and then some more social media chats.

Not only did we hear from Jody and Nic of the hugely popular Stay at Home Mum {65,000+ LIKERS on facebook} but they asked me to speak a little about working with brands, new media and approaching bloggers. That was cool. You guys know me, I loooooove to talk. Especially about blogging. Mmmm, yummy.

So all for sharing the love, I thought I would share with you the top 5 things {in no particular order} I took away from the workshop;

  • Be as consistent on your social media as you are on your blog.
  • Facebook shout outs breed lazy likers.
  • Offer something of value that is unique.
  • Be personal and interactive.
  • Pick your focus and hit that.

It also got me thinking about all the information we as bloggers gather that our business friends may not know. That makes us a resource. Potential social media managers, consultants and freelance awesome’ists. An interesting concept, don’t you think? That a hobby could become a full time career.

I for one would be totally ok with tweeting and facebooking all day. Just saying.

  1. Some good tips Melissa.  Interesting about the Facebook shout outs, but I can understand it as well.   It’s always exciting to think that one day you may be able to take what you love and do it full time! :)

      Thank you, I can’t take credit for them, but I will. Haha. And yes, it’s SO exciting to imagine.

      The theory comes that these likers participate very little and will usually unfollow at some stage. They are lazy likers.

  2. Hmmm, I think I’m definitely doing it all wrong LOL I think I fail on all counts and I’m not sure what point 2 means… please explain? Ta x

      Ha. Do what works for you. I think that’s the big lesson. Until it doesn’t. Work that is. Then find someone who stuff is working FOR and ask them for tips.

      Point two: The theory is that these likers participate very little and will usually unfollow at some stage. They are lazy likers.

    I keep taking everything you say on board. Everything I learnt at workshop. I’m working towards all the greatness I see and hope for myself and my blogs. As much as I like to have goals to strive for I also like allowing things develop organically if you know what I mean. For example I’m still trying to get my head around twitter and interacting with people. I’ve tried interactig with brands, I have no idea if I’m doing things right or wrong…I’m just doing it. Hopefully it will all still get me to the end results I aspire to.

      Great Trudie. There is so much new stuff, changes and movement in social media. Keep tweeting, you’ll get there. :)

    In 2 months time I am running a course I am yet to write called “Making Connections” and it’s for Seniors…ie, people my age…who have a need to learn how to have a FB account, open a gmail account & send emails, learn about skype ….because they want to remain up to date and in touch with their kids and grandkids.
    I had no idea that when I enquirer about attending a meditation course (for seniors!) I’d wind up determining a course I could teach with groups of people who will feel less intimidated by another “oldie” teaching them rather than a young un. So…you never know where your on-line skills may take you! I didn’t!!
    Good luck with a social media role somewhere – you’d be ace!

      This is SO wonderful Denyse. Exactly. When I was retired last year {haha} I helped set up a few computer, printers and iPads. It’s a gaping hole in the market, not to mention the riht thing to do. Good luck!

        Thank you Melissa…pretty excited myself.. D

  5. I’d also be happy with FBing and Tweeting all day. Surely there’s a profession in that!?!?!

    I went to a ‘writing for the internet/intranet’ thing at work last week and was surprised that I got something out of it as I wasn’t expecting to.

    I need to be more consistent with social media. I’ve only recently set up FB pages but tend to use FB and Twitter in bursts rather than with any regularity!

      Uh huh, it’s a Social Media Manager. Hands up who wants THAT on a business card? {Meeeeeeeeee}

      Yeah, consistency is key apparently. With everything!

    2. Deb, there are people who do this all day! We have skills!!

        Indeed they do and indeed we have. :)

  6. Great post, Melissa, and thanks for linking up. It’s amazing the skills we have leaned – and practise – everyday as bloggers. We have a lot to offer companies.

      Thank you. This workshop really bought that home for me. A clear and extensive skill set.

    Nice post Melissa, I have realized recently the wealth of knowledge, experience and skill many of us have built up in the medium…. and I have been approached to share that knowledge – it’s a lot more than just facebooking and tweeting isn’t it :-)))

      Thanks Sarah. Yes, you and me both. Great news about the opportunity that has arisen for you. I look forward seeing it come to fruition.

  8. Good tips here. I’ve just picked up a contract where I manage my clients social media 8 hrs a week. Getting paid to do what I would gladly do for free.
