90s Films – A Love Affair

There was a lady in our town when I was younger who dressed as thought the 1960’s never ended. Fringes and low flowing hair. Bell bottoms and platforms. I used to wonder what made that so darn special that she couldn’t let it go. Now well into her fifties this woman was stuck in a time warp. I would think about her now and again as I went about my life. As a young adult whenever I saw someone very clearly rocking the eighties look in the naughties. I wondered about that woman and if she still dressed like a flashback to the sixties. I think part of me has started to understand that woman.

You see, I like the old stuff. Not too old, just prime of my youth type old. think 1990 – 2000. Movies especially. I just prefer my movies with a side order of grungy nineties ick on it. I wanted to work at Empire Records. I wanted the posh upper east side, parental free residence of Cruel Intentions. Especially Catherine’s room. I wanted to road trip and find adventure with my girlfriends like Thelma and Louise. Well, you get the point. Was it because they were speaking to a younger, less tied down soul when I first saw them? Did they speak to me because in that moment of life when anything truly was possible without care or concern?

Maybe I love 1990’s films because they brainwashed me?

I wonder these things some times. I see a lot of newer movies, what can I say, I like background noise while I work. None speaks to me quite as much as the ones I saw and loved in the nineties. Though to be fair, I didn’t have a smart phone permanently attached to my side in the nineties. When I watched a movie, I actually watched it. It’s an interesting thing to ponder, don’t you think? Were movie plots better or was I just more easily impressed? Am I looking at them through the rose-coloured glasses of nostalgia?

Here’s a list of some of my favourites, some silly, some serious, some that are just something else all together. You tell me.

  • Cruel Intentions
  • Empire Records
  • Thelma & Louise
  • The Matrix
  • Jurassic Park
  • Good Will Hunting
  • Clerks
  • Boogie Nights
  • Shawshank Redemption
  • SCREAM!

Plus plenty more on THIS list. I’m wondering too if Stealing Beauty and How to Make an American Quilt fit this category. Because I love them too! See, obsessed. What can I say. I like the old stuff better than the new stuff. Or maybe it’s just that I’ve seen them so many times there are etched permanently INTO my brain?

Do you have a favourite 90’s movie?

  1. I loved The War of the Roses. I loved the house, & that she started her own catering company. The marriage part was a bit freaky, though, we saw it just after we got engaged. Bwahahahaha :)

Ooooo! These are good ones. Yes! I have Reality Bites on video here. No video player any more but I can’t let it go.

  6. Most of my favourite 90’s movies are the ones I saw at the cinema that ended in clapping or cheering.  Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Austin Powers, Waynes World, Clerks, 12 Monkeys and Ed Wood.

You just can’t argue with a happy audience!

If you had worked at Empire Records you would have worked for me – i wanted to own that place man! Also, kind of fell in love with Rory Cochrane during that movie and then saw him as Slater in ” Dazed and Confused ” and it was love all over again ( even though he was a total stoner ).
I’d probably add ” Cant Hardly Wait “, ” Clueless “, ” Romy and Michelle High School Reunion “, ” American Pie ” and a whole lot of dramas i cant quite think of right now….!

I have no idea? Probably. Old huh? It’s all relative. ;)

  9. Reality Bites takes me back! I still listen to the soundtrack. But are you sure The Matrix was 90’s? Seriously?

According to Google. But I was thinking it must have been close. I graduated in 2000 and I remember watching it with school friends.

  10. Mine is Empire Records, clueless and the mighty ducks series. Aw man!
