Update your avatar would you!

The top three things I got from sales conferences {real estate brat} that will improve your blog. From a non-expert who wishes her blog was ever referred to as professional but figures, what the heck, I’ll tell you anyway.

  1. UPDATE your profile photo – This tip was pointed out to us as have a recent photo on your business card. The idea of this made me nervy. Why would I want to shove my face out there for general criticism and won’t people think I’m a tool and up myself? No. Actually it is an excellent tool to assist people in connecting with you and ultimately keeping the card/not un-following you. Because let’s face it, the impressive photo of you from ten years ago when you where 15kg lighter with brown hair {you now have blonde}, oh, and you were TEN YEARS younger will not help people recognise you. And that recognition is what you are after. Isn’t it always.
  2. Be unique and stay AHEAD of the pack – There is no point doing the same thing that every one else is doing. Do your thing. Be yourself. And by doing this you and your blog will be unique. Do something that fits with that and is just like you, promotion wise, and it will always be your thing. When it comes to real estate they use this to direct people to create unique campaigns for self promotion. Direct people to tailor everything to fit them. Trailing behind and copying the ‘competition’ will only ever see you play catch up. I’ve done this, tried to replicate something cool I’ve seen on another blog and what a failure. It was awkward and a bad fit.

  3. Reputation IS everything – Never sacrifice yourself or what you stand for. This one applies to life, not just sales and definitely not just blogging. Never do anything that will sacrifice who you are and what you stand for. In my opinion once you sacrifice your integrity, your reputation, it is tarnished for life. In sales this is a killer and so it should be. Blogging, you only have one chance to be who you are and stand up for that. You can build an entire career on a reputation.
So there you go. Sharing a wealth of real estate and sales training and squishing it into a blogging ormat. Do you already apply these? Let’s talk about it.

  1. Off to get me a new avatar!! :P

  2. I've always been a bit wary about splashing my face around the net. Just not comfortable with it. But I took the plunge last week and used a photo of myself as a background to my about.me page. One of my long time readers commented that she had no idea what I looked like! Maybe I should have done it earlier…

  3. I am shameless. My mug is out there for all to see!I always enjoyed personal service and like to give this to my readers. I want to be like your favourite local coffee shop who knows what you want as soon as you walk in the door and you don't even need to ask.I find having a human face to a name or company helps people form a connection and remain loyal. So I fully intend to cash in on that! :PSeriously…wait til you see my business cards (currently in production);)
