Hell just froze over… Literally.

Around here, we are fans of the drink. And it sounds sad, but we really, really are. Often you can find us at a friends house, family gatherings or generally hanging out and having a few beverages. In fact in some ways we probably contribute to the nations drinking problems. However we have a strict no feeding the under age’rs drinks policy. So that bit wasn’t us.
But now, as it gets slightly out of hand due to work pressure and general pissed off’ness at stuff, the time has come to give it up. Even if just for a while. So on this, the first day of October. In the fateful year of 2010. {Well, actually it was a couple of days ago… But who is counting.} I declared that I, Melissa, will be participating in;
OctSOBER!*
Paused for shocked gasps from those that know me. But wait, it starts after the wine we planned to consume at my SIL’s baby shower tomorrow. So officially, THEN starts OctSOBER, for me. And I know, you are laughing at me, because seriously, it’s like 30 days (less thanks to the baby shower discount) of sobrity. Most of you have done at least 9 months. But humour please. This is kinda a big deal for me.
In fact I am a little afraid. And that is what tells me it might be a good idea. However, disclaimer this now…. IF I decide to go to my high school ten year reunion on the 31st of this month I am not going sober. No way. NO HOW. So the official end date would be then. If not, we’ll go to the next day. I’ll keep you posted.
Anyway, I am looking for the benefits with my weight, overall health and to my reputation. Ha! no more drunken trips to the CBD and running into parents of kids from my high school and calling them the wrong name, asking after the wrong kid and generally slurring that my life is good, pass it on. So. Anyway. Wish me luck. Sober weekend updates to follow. It should make for interesting reading. Different at least.
* OctSOBER may or may not be a real thing, but I am doing it anyway.
And no I am not joining the spam riddled facebook group just to prove I am doing it.
Not now, not ever. Got it, good.

  1. Good luck! I can go years without drinking so this wouldn't be much of a challenge for me BUT no chocolate for the month of October – hmmmm could be onto something there!!You CAN do it!xx

  2. good luck. back in my heavy drinking days (when I singlehandedly kept the liquor industry in NZ afloat) I went on a 3 month sobriety thing. It was amazing. I rediscovered sunday mornings for one thing. And when I got back into the drinking saddle it didn't take as much wine to have an effect – I was a cheap date again – fun!!looking forward to hearing how it all goes.

  3. Loved that post. At least your honest!I hope you last a long time and find out how much good it does your body and well being!I used to drink almost every night and couldn't wait for the time when I could guzzle down a few glasses of wine! But now I only have a few on the w/e…During the week it's just a cuppa after dinner! I find it so much easier to get up in the morning and go about my day. And I generally feel better.Have a ball at the baby shower, and I look forward to reading about how you go with OctSOBER! :)

  4. Oh, this is a great idea!!I hope it goes really well for you and maybe you could see yourself going sober to the reunion? Watching everyone else there getting pissed could make for a great blog post.

  5. If you set your mind to it – I KNOW you'll do it! Kinda like Lent in October isn't it? Love the idea of OctSOBER. I look forward to your posts!
