The great costume debate…

So there is a party. A very important, long awaited party. It is my sisters 21st birthday party. And with it, comes the decree that we all dress as Barbie or action figures. Simple really. It’s a pretty wide net. Come as anything blonde and you’re done.
So I decided I would go as Ballerina Barbie. Wearing the petticoat from my wedding over tights with a black (sleeved, thank you very much) leotard. Cute flats and some ribbons wrapped around my ankles and calves. Done and done. I was even planning to purchase some sort of hair piece so I can do a massive bun on top of my head. With ribbon wrapped around, of course. Cute pancake makeup. Lots of eyeliner and off we go.
And Hubby..? Well we are making him go as Buzz Lightyear. Because the kids will love it. And every party needs someone with pop out wings and lasers. Don’t you think?
I love costume parties. I get that the expense can be a pain in the bum. And the effort. There is usually some effort above and beyond the usual party effort. I adore the variety. The creativity. And the frivolousness of it. If it were up to me, I would put out a party mandate. All parties must include costumes.
Goodness knows how. Once my parents and I went to this massive effort to dress me up for a youth group event. I was even in a pencilled on mustache and beard. And I arrived and no one else was dressed up. We had gotten the wrong week. It was a disaster. OMG. How I ever recovered from that, I have no idea.
Do you do dress up parties? What has been your favourite ever costume? Do you think I can pull off a petticoat as a tutu?

  1. I went as Cleopatra once. Raced all over town searching for costumes and rejecting the 'lesser' ones.Ah, I was to be the belle of the ball.So were the other 2 Cleos *sigh

  2. Sounds great! I usually groan at the idea of dress up parties, but once you have the idea, go to a little bit of effort, then the parties are such fun! Nothing like dressups to be a great ice breaker!Promise to post some photos??

  3. I love people who really make an effort at fancy dress partied, but then they always put me to shame as I always leave my outfits to the last minute and they come out a bit pants :( I should really start planning my Poison Ivy halloween outfit asap to stop this from happening again…

  4. I knew of someone once who went to a "P" themed party as a picnic. a cape was the picnic blanket, with all kinds of foods and (empty)drinks pinned, tied or glued on to it.
