My House… Layout assistance required.

We have an open plan area in our house that is virtually a large square. It houses the kitchen, dining and living areas. It has doors to the bedroom side of the house, the main bed and the rear patio and backyard. It is an imposing space when you walk in. And a giant pain in the butt in terms of decorating. We love a bit of colour here and we often change things around by changing cushions and wall hangings etc.
I guess my question is, how would you suggest we tackle the fact that everything is laying out in full view. Do you see a better way to set out the area? Take a look at the rest of the picks and give me your ideas. The budget is tight. Most of the furtinure is flexible on whether it stays or goes and the only thing that has sort of a fixe placement is the TV needs to plug into the wall it is currently on or where the blue couch is. Ready? Go.

Soooo, got any genius ideas? Help a girl out, please.

  1. I would put the TV against the other wall, as TVs in front of windows don't allow the windows to be opened! Plus those two long vertical windows would look lovely without anything blocking them.In the dining area I would put a buffet or hall table under the picture collage. I would also lay a rug in the lounge area to make it more warm looking and less "cold" with the tiles.

  2. I would also unblock the windows….but I love the rest. I wouldn't change a thing else!!! and I am totally jeolous that you live in a house…….my shed *sigh*…..

  3. yep i agree, put the tv where the blue couch is and then one of the couches at right angle to the front door. I would almost build a temporary wall (or even a room divider/bookself you can buy from IKEA) there to conseal the living area from when you first wall into the house. Having a formal entry that opens to the living area certainly gives you privacy as well.My two cents anyway

  4. I would move the TV to where the blue lounge is currently.I would put a warm/earthy coloured rug on the floor in the middle of the floor in front of the TV and the coffee table on it.I would then position the blue lounge directly opposite the TV's new position, so as you walk in the front door [I presume that's the front door?] the back of the blue couch is immediately on your right. This does several things. It makes your lounge a defined room WITHIN a room but still keeps the room open plan as such. The rug will make the lounge seem "cosy and warm" and by moving the TV from in front of the windows, you'll be able to open them up and allow light to flood in!I'd also be inclined to put some colour on the walls in the shape of paint, a nice bright colour on the wall I'd move the TV to and then the SAME colour on the wall with all the photographs on in the dining area. This will do two things 1. Warm both rooms up and give them some "life" [can you tell I don't do pale or neutral colours?] and 2. tie both "rooms" together while also keeping them separate!

  5. Put the TV where the blue couch is, set the blue couch directly opposite it, define that area with a rug to tie it together. In that last picture, the photos on the wall need a little rearranging. Take that big black frame on the right hand side and move it up where the M and the two smaller ones are, put those two little ones one under the other where the black one was with the M to the right. Tie it all together with a narrow hall table and a lamp on the left hand side of it,(the table),a wide shallow bowl maybe in silver? on the right side, another area rug under the dining suite. For that big sliding glass door, change the blind to a colour that ties in with both areas. Change the orange couch seat to blue (dye it?) and put orange scatter cushions, with maybe one or two blue ones as well. Or that semi circular table on the left would look good under the photo arrangement, but with nothing on top of it. Colour on the living room walls, with a warmer shade of the same colour in the dining area.

  6. Ahhhh. Thanks. The TV etc are being moved (thanks hubby) tomorrow night. And I am keeping my eye for rugs. And since we decided we would definitely get a new couch, I am going to see if they will chuck in some of the other furniture you suggested… hall table or wall unit thingy.

  7. OMG!! It's soooo tidy! :)

  8. Debbiea – It's an illusion sustained by a VERY good cleaning lady! I'm spoilt like that. :oP
