My Meaning of Christmas

It’s all a down hill run from here to Christmas and I for one couldn’t be happier… You see for my family and I Christmas is all about time spent together, hot days at the beach, seafood, chocolate Christmas stockings and bonding (having upwards of 10 people in a two bedroom unit helps!).

Christmas for us means family. It started when my siblings and I we’re children. My little brother and sister and I would pile into the one room, talk, joke and bond until the early hours of the morning – it wasn’t that we were waiting for Santa but that we loved spending time together before the first to wake would awaken the others when the Christmas extravaganza to begin. It’s the same to this very day despite the fact we all now have partners and home’s of our own. Well not exactly the same… the three of us crammed into a single bed these days would be very uncomfortable indeed. We still spend as much of Christmas together as possible while spreading our love of Christmas to our new (in-law) families.

Christmas means creativity, expression and laughter; My mother created Christmas with such flair… Our home always resembled a department store with colour themed decorations and the piles of gifts to match. It never did matter that our new schools shoes, pencil cases and backpacks were passed off as gifts… we loved the sheer volume of presents to open. The beauty of her creation drew us in and around the tree and we would spend hours on Christmas morning laughing around the tree as one by one we opened our gifts. I love those mornings.

Christmas means HOLIDAYS spent at the stunning Sunshine Coast, by the water, enjoying this bright, shiney time of year in sunny Queensland (Australia). Where we wake up early, eat and head to the beach for hours of body surfing and snow cones (you know, shaved ice with suger syrup poured over it). We spend hours sun bathing (yes, responsibly with plenty of SPF 15+) while the paler members of the family enjoying the shelter of Dad’s dorky but oh so practical beach umbrella.

So count it down with me this year as we move towards my favourite time of the year… An expression of love and family and creativity and laughter and sunny days at the beach.

  1. I love your memories of Christmas – and think I need to organise to spend at least one summer at the beach! Sounds blissful

  2. Oh WOW! Your Christmas memories are amazing! S'ok about the school stuff wrapped up… I shove knickers in the kids stockings to fill them out – practical, but they are all individually wrapped and they LOVE it!
